Whether you plan a career as an author or are going into business or even law, a major in writing will help you better prepare for your future. Good writing skills are an essential part of any career path. Writing skills are a vital part of the day-to-day communications in any work environment. Not only will the writing major enable you to showcase your talents, it will also arm you to communicate effectively with others.

With the options of focusing on print or broadcast media, creative or non-fiction writing or even teaching writing, the writing major has built-in flexibility to meet your needs. Writing majors are exposed to a wide variety of practical aspects in the field. With the opportunity to tutor in the Writing Center, writing majors also gain valuable work experience while assisting others in honing their own skills. As a writing major, you will also have the opportunity to assemble a portfolio showcasing your expertise to present for admittance to graduate school or to obtain a job in your chosen field.

The major in writing is part of the Department of English. The objectives of the Department of English are to educate students in written and oral expression, linguistics, the cultural significance of literature and literary history. The department prepares majors for teaching, graduate study, and professional and business careers.
