Are you interested in public service? Do you prefer working with people or inanimate objects? Do you want to stay locally or relocate anywhere around the world? These are some questions you need to ask yourself when making a decision about a career in chemistry.
A bachelor of science degree in chemistry provides the foundation for many careers and life options after college. While most chemists ultimately define their specialty as analytical, environmental, organic, polymer, medicinal-pharmaceutical and agricultural chemistry are other common specialties in industry. While the majority of chemists work in research, marketing, management and chemical information services are also areas in which chemists can apply their skills. Government or private sector patent offices provide still other career options. Teaching is another important field and many companies also employ consultants to provide specialized knowledge to others within the company or to teach outside entities about their products.
As you decide where to go with your degree, keep in mind that you will probably work in many types of jobs during the course of your lifetime. Each one will combine to expand your knowledge. Enjoy whatever avenue you decide to pursue and know that you are working to make a difference in the world around you as a chemist for life.
