Members of Mount Union's Investment Team Manage four different Stock Portfolios. The First is the "Oak" Portfolio. It is a competitive portfolio sponsored by Oak Associates. This portfolio is presented in a competition against roughly 12 other schools once a year at Oak Associates in Fairlawn, Ohio. The returns and equity picks of each school are compared and several schools with the highest return are awarded more money to invest with in their portfolio.
Mount Union's Investment Team won this competition in 1997. They had a 20 percent return. The team has also placed in the top ten schools for all buy the past three years.
Second is Hillier Portfolio. It funds a Scholarship in the Department and is a conservatively managed Portfolio.
The Third is the Datek Portfolio, which is an aggressive portfolio of technology and emerging technology stocks.
The Last is Mcdonald Portfolio, which is a mutual fund portfolio.
All of the money they use is real and has been generously donated by alumni. The use of buy and hold, as well as short term investment stategies, are used. These students would not normally be able to invest thousands of dollars in their own strategies and ideas. The use of real money and the goal to earn a positive return, especially in this down market, provides an invaluable learning experience for the students.
