What will count as “Research”?
“Undergraduate Research” is being defined as scholarly inquiry that employs theory and methods in the systematic search for knowledge and demonstrates the mastery of the skills expected of undergraduate students within their majors/disciplines.  Student research is not limited to work completed for an SCE, and students do not have to be seniors.  Also, students who graduated in Dec. 2007 are welcome to participate.  There will be two types of participation possible:

Formal presentations.  Each department will nominate a limited number of students to give formal presentations, which could take the form of short artistic performances or talks about the performing and/or fine arts; short talks on the methods and findings of a research project; physical demonstrations  that highlight research results; Power Point presentations that illustrate a concept revealed by research, and so on.  Each presentation will be followed by a short discussion period.  The Task Force on Undergraduate Research will receive nominations, make final selections, and invite students to participate.  The Task Force will then create a program for the day.  Each department may nominate up to five student projects for formal presentations.

Poster presentations. Any student can present his or her research in poster form and be on hand to answer viewers’ questions.  Students need not be nominated to participate in this manner, and we hope that many students will participate in this part of the research day.  Each department chair must identify students from their department who want to participate, listing their names on the nomination forms under the section on poster presentations.  Posters can be hung up or set on a table.
