Taking Mount Union College to Asia: Tracking President Giese's Trip

Dr. Richard Giese and his wife Sandra and Dr. William Coleman, assistant to the president for diversity affairs, and his wife Ruth as well as Scott Slabaugh, director of international student services, have embarked on a trip to bolster Mount Union College’s Asia Initiative.  Their visits will include trips to sister colleges and universities to encourage exchanges as well as visiting Mount Union alumni who live overseas.

President Giese and Dr. Coleman visited the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Penang and were hosted by Mount Union alumnus Dr. Jason Tye, Associate Dean.  They held meetings to establish student and faculty exchanges.

President Giese and Dr. Tye agree to continue to seek out ways in which their two
institutions can mutually cooperate.

Mount Union Alumni Marcus Smith ’88, Senior Vice President and Director of Asian Research for MFS Investment Management, and his wife Celina (Holmes) Smith ’86 who now reside in Singapore joined President and Mrs. Giese for dinner.

President Giese and Dean Zhang shake hands on an agreement in principle for student exchanges with a formal agreement to be signed at a later date.  Plans for faculty exchange were also sketched out with details to be finalized at a later date.  These exchange agreements will be the first of their kind with any foreign institution for the Department of Humanities at

President Giese presents the “Thousand Paper Cranes of Peace” which were made by Mount Union’s Association of International Students as a sign of the College’s commitment to Peace.  The cranes will be on display at the Sadako Monument in the Hiroshima Peace Park
and then will be archived.

 

President Giese with Hiroshima City Mayor, Akiba.  The President and the Mount Union delegation were given a private meeting with Mayor Akiba.  In this meeting, the Mayor expressed his gratitude to Mount Union for hosting the Hiroshima Peace Forum in October 2007.  Mount Union was the first stop on a circuit of Peace Forum events in the U.S. and it was reported to Mayor Akiba
that Mount Union’s outstanding organization and attendance set the standard for the
remainder of the Peace forums.

 

President and Mrs. Giese were honored as special guests at a dinner hosted by members of the Hiroshima Women's High School and Universty.  Talks were held to promote continued cooperation with Jogakuin High School and the possibility of extending programs to the Unversity as well

This group included five of 10 former Murakami Scholars
 

Suminao Murakami, younger brother of Yoshino Murakami ('56)  and his nephew represent the Murakami family at the Hiroshima alimni reunion.  Mount Union College and Hiroshima Jogakuin Girl's High School are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Murakami Scholarship.  Yoshino Murakami is a 1956 Mount Union graduate who passed away in 1966 due to health complications related to the Hiroshima atomic bomb blast.  Mount Union went on to establish the Murakami Scholarship in her name for graduates of the Hiroshima Jogakuin Girls High School.
