The Writing Across the Curriculum program offers an opportunity for students to refine their writing skills throughout their college career. The program is comprised of two parts: 1) a Writing Center that facilitates one-on-one skill development; and 2) a "W" course component wherein each student is required to successfully complete nine hours of "W" credit beyond EH 100 in at least three courses from not less than three different disciplines. Students transferring to Mount Union College with 57 or fewer semester hours completed must successfully complete the full "W" course component. Students transferring with more than 57 semester hours will be required to complete six hours of the "W" course component in two different disciplines.

Although it is important to note that each student must successfully complete three "W" courses, it is more important to recognize that these must be in three different disciplines. A discipline is identified by the two character portion of a course number: i.e., EH for English or GY for geology or CE for early childhood education.

For students who would like to have a course taken at another institution considered for possible "W" credit, please contact Dr. Rodney Dick, Chapman Hall room 477, (330) 823-4792.

When courses are offered as "W" courses, the department may teach one or more sections that are "W" sections and may teach one or more sections that do not have the "W" label. However, a number of departments have permanent “W” courses, ones that are always offered with "W" credit. In order to learn what "W" courses are available in any semester it is necessary to check the schedule of courses to be offered for that term. "W" courses will have a 'W' after the course number such as HI 210W or SN 430W.

SPECIAL HINT: "W" course sections can best be found in Self-Service by going to 'Find Course Sections'. Under 'Course' enter @W and click on 'Search'. You will then be given in alphabetical order all "W" sections, from AA through TH. If you want only "W" courses in a discipline enter the two character discipline code followed by @W such as MU@W and you will be given all music "W" sections.

The following PDF is a list of courses that have been approved to be offered as "W" courses if the academic department wishes to do so as well as those that are permanent “W” courses.
