Student Employment Mission Statement

The mission of the Mount Union College Student Employment Program is to provide financial assistance to students through employment opportunities. The program fosters diverse employment opportunities, leadership development, transferable life skills, and personal and career development of student employees.

Because the program is designed for students who need employment to assist in financing their college costs, preference is given to students with financial need. Students must be enrolled as a full-time degree-seeking student at Mount Union College in order to be eligible for student employment.

Federal Work Study

Federal Work Study is a federally funded Title IV program. The purpose of the program is to help students, who have a demonstrated financial need, contribute financially toward their college education, and to assist the college in performing tasks that do not require full-time employees.

Federal Work Study cannot be determined unless the student has filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This form helps to calculate a student's eligibility for financial aid and must be filed annually. The student must be registered full-time for at least 12 hours per semester. Once both conditions have been met, the Office of Student Financial Services can determine a student's federal work-study award. The student's federal work study award is indicated on his/her financial aid award, along with other types of financial aid the student is eligible to receive. The amount shown is the maximum that he/she may earn.

A few jobs on campus require special talents, skills and responsibilities (such as Community Educators, Academic Tutors and Student Assistant Coaches). Eligibility is not based on financial need. However, if a student is chosen for one of these jobs and is eligible for other need-based aid, earnings from that job plus all other aid (grants, loans, scholarships) cannot exceed financial need.

Students with no work eligibility can apply for Campus Employment after the second week of classes as long as all available jobs are advertised on the website for at least two weeks. All work study eligible students must be given first priority.

Mount Union College encourages students to get involved in community service opportunities. The Higher Education Amendments of 1992 define community service to include services in the areas of welfare, social services, transportation, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, work in service opportunities or youth corps, specified services for agencies identified in the National and Community Service Act of 1990, support services for students with disabilities, and mentoring activities.
