Mount Union's Baseball Team Wins Home Opener

Erik MillerThe Mount Union College baseball team (7-5) defeated Lake Erie College (1-10) by a score of 9-5 Wednesday, March 26 at the 23rd Street Field in Alliance, Ohio.

The Raiders wasted no time as they scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first inning. A three-run double by freshman/shortstop Craig Knott and a two-run double by senior/catcher Jon Schulz accounted for all 5 Raider runs.

After sophomore/pitcher Erik Miller retired the side in the second, senior/designated hitter Andy Warner added one more run in the bottom half of the inning to put the Purple and White ahead 6-0.

The Storm fought back as they scored two runs in the top of the third, and held the Raiders scoreless in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 6-2.

Junior/outfielder Grant Sevek added his second triple of the game to start off the bottom of the fourth, and later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman/outfielder Greg Ferrell to extend the lead to 7-2.

Sevek added another run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo shot to right-center to put Mount Union ahead 8-2.

Lake Erie cut into the lead with a three run single by Keith Trumbauer to make the score 8-5 in the top of the seventh.

After the Raiders added one more run in the bottom of the eighth, sophomore/pitcher Joe Irwin closed the door on the Storm to give the Purple and White their seventh win of the season.

Individually the Raiders were led by Sevek who went 3-5 with two triples and a home-run, and Knott who added three RBIs. Miller went four innings surrendering two unearned runs on two hits, while Irwin went five strong innings earning the win striking out seven for the Raider pitching staff.

Mount Union will open OAC play at Ohio Northern on Saturday, March 29 in Ada, Ohio. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
