Raider Baseball Team Splits With Pioneers

Mount Union College's baseball team (16-7, 7-1 OAC) split with Marietta College (10-14, 6-2 OAC) on Wednesday, April 9.  The Raiders won the first game 4-1 but fell to the Pioneers 14-2 in the second game.

Marietta scored first in the second inning and would be their only run the entire game.  The Purple Raiders struck back in the top of the fourth with a home run by freshman/outfielder Greg Ferrell.  The Purple and White would attack again from a single by senior/catcher Jon Schulz and a double by sophomore/ designated hitter Connor Nell, scoring Schulz, putting the Raiders ahead 3-1.

The Raiders increased their lead in the top of the fifth when sophomore/first baseman Cory Slaybaugh doubled, scoring junior/outfielder Grant Sevek.

Offensively Mount Union was led by Ferrell who was 1-3 with a home run, Slaybaugh went 1-3 with an RBI, and junior/third baseman Nate McFarland went 2-3.

On the mound for the Purple Raiders, sophomore/pitcher Paul Mariotti pitched a complete game improving his record to 5-0.  He struck out five batters, allowed two walks and only one earned run.

The last time the Purple Raiders defeated the Marietta Pioneers was in 2002 when they split a double header.

In the second game, the Purple and White were defeated 14-2.  Game leaders included, freshman/short stop Craig Knott who was 2-4 with a double, Ferrell went 3-4, Slaybaugh went 2-3 with 2 RBI.
