Lady Raiders Set New Wins Record In Sweep
Mount Union College’s softball team (33-7, 14-4 OAC) swept Heidelberg (7-27, 3-15 OAC) in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26, 2008 in Alliance, Ohio, securing a second place finish in Ohio Athletic Conference. The Raiders won the first game 5-3 and the second game 4-2. With the wins, Mount Union set the new team record for wins in a season (33). The old mark of 31 was set in 1990.
In game one, the Purple and White jumped out to an early lead when sophomore/shortstop Meghan Simons singled to start things off. Then senior/pitcher Lindsey Royer doubled her in giving Mount Union a 1-0 lead after one inning. The Lady Raiders would keep the bats going in the bottom of the second inning when senior/first baseman Katie Olive led off with a homerun. Sophomore/center fielder Meghan Allen doubled and senior/designated player Lee Negrelli singled, scoring sophomore/third baseman Anna Horning to make the score 3-0. Simons added another single, scoring Horning to end the inning 4-0 in favor of Mount Union.
The Student Princes fought back in the top of the fifth when Coree Price singled scoring Dessiree Burtch. Mount Union scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 5-1. Heidelberg continued their comeback in the top and sixth innings, scoring two more runs.
Royer was too much to handle as the Purple Raiders prevailed to a 5-3 victory. In the win, she had nine strikeouts and allowed only two walks.
At the plate, Simons finished 3-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Game two was a pitcher’s duel featuring Mount Union’s freshman Kellie Schmucker and Heidelberg’s Nicole Bachman. Neither team successfully put a run on the board until the fourth inning.
The Student Princes scored first off a double by Andrea Gerdeman – 1-0. Mount Union responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by freshman/pinch hitter Gabby Koprivec.
Each team added another run respectively.
In the circle for the Raiders, freshman Kellie Schmucker went the distance for her fourth win of the season. She allowed two runs on five hits and had three strikeouts in her outing.
At the plate, center fielder Meghan Allen went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Mount Union now advances to the OAC tournament. The #2 seeded Raiders will battle #3 seed Ohio Northern on Friday, May 2. Time is TBA.
