Lady Raiders Sweep Terriors

Negrelli,Lee.jpgMount Union College's softball team (29-7, 10-4 OAC) swept Hiram College (10-18) in a doubleheader by the scores of 9-1 and 11-7 on April 21.

In game one, the Purple and White jumped out to an early lead after back-to-back doubles from senior/designated hitter Lee Negrelli and sophomore/shortstop Meghan Simons.  Freshman/catcher Mara Palombaro then homered to give Mount Union a 3-0 lead.

Mount Union would strike again in the top of the second scoring two more runs off of Negrelli and Simons singles.  The Raiders would keep the momentum going in the top of the third scoring one more run to make the score 6-0.

Hiram would score their only run in the bottom of the fifth. 

Offensively Mount Union was led by Negrelli, who was 4-4, including an RBI and two doubles, Simons who went 2-4 with two RBI and two doubles, and senior/pitcher Lindsey Royer who was 2-3, with three RBI.

In the circle, Royer received her 20th win, with seven strikeouts and one walk in the contest.

In game two of the doubleheader, the Purple and White would again attack early scoring two runs in both the first and second innings.  Hiram would take the lead in the bottom of the third inning and held Mount Union scoreless in both the third and fourth inning.

However, the Lady Raiders rallied in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs en route to the win.

Leaders in the game included Negrelli, who went 3-5, Simons and Royer who were both 2-4 with two RBI,  and Horning who was 2-5 with two RBI.

Once again, Royer received the win, improving her record to 21-4 on the year.

Mount Union next travels to Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll on Wednesday, April 23.  First pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
