Mount Union Opens OAC Softball Championships with Win

Mount Union College's softball team (34-7), the #2 seed, defeated #3 seeded Ohio Northern (27-12) by a 5-1 count to open the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Softball Championships hosted by Muskingum College on Friday, May 2 in New Concord.

After a pitcher's duel early, the Purple Raider offense went work scoring five runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Gabbie Koprivec highlighted the inning with a pinch-hit triple driving in three runs.  Ohio Northern scored its only run in the top of the sixth inning.

Mount Union ace Lindsey Royer (24-4) earned the win allowing just the one run on six hits while striking out 12 batters. 

At the plate, the Purple and White were led by Koprivec's three RBI, while outfielder Erin Duignan, Royer and outfielder Meghan Allen each added a single.

Mount Union scored its five runs on just four hits.

With the win, the Raiders advance to face the winner of the #1 Muskingum and #4 John Carroll showdown.
