Purple Raiders Keep Winning Streak Alive

The 18th ranked Mount Union College softball team (17-3, 2-0 OAC) took both games from Lake Erie College (9-9) on Wednesday, April 2 in Painesville, Ohio.  The Raiders won the opener 4-3 and the second game 9-1.

In game one, the Purple Raiders attacked first in the third inning with a lead off walk by third baseman Anna Horning, followed by a sacrafice bunt by Megan Polifrone to advance Horning to second base.  After a ground out, center fielder Megan Allen singled, scoring Horning. 

After three scoreless innings, the Storm rallied in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game at one. 

In extra innings, the Purple and White scored first with a 2 RBI single from catcher Mara Palombaro.  Lake Erie would respond with two runs in the bottom of the eighth tying the score at three.

Mount Union would seal the deal with an RBI single from Allen, ending the game 4-3.

Staff ace Lindsey Royer extended her pitching record to (11-2).  She allowed two walks and struck out 10.

In game two, Mount Union completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory.  Back to back singles from right fielder Lee Negrelli and center fielder Allen kick started the inning.  Designated hitter Lindsey Royer would single to center, scoring Negrelli.  Second baseman Alex Lucak reached first base on an error by the second baseman allowing Allen to score.  An RBI single from catcher Gabby Koprivec scored Royer to make the score 3-0.  Shortstop Meghan Simons added two more runs with a single to left field capped off the fifth inning.

The Purple Raiders would score two more runs in the top of the second with both RBI coming from Koprivec.  Mount Union would finish the game with two more runs scored in the top of the fifth inning.  The final score would be 9-1.

The Storm's only run would come in the bottom of the third inning from an RBI double from third baseman Katie Puda. 

Picking up the win was Kellie Schmucker, who struck out six and surrounded one walk to move her mark to (2-1).

Mount Union has now won 12 consecutive games and 14 of its last 15 overall.
