Raider Pitching Highlights Doubleheader Victories

Mount Union College's softball team (13-3; 2-0 OAC) took both games of a doubleheader against Baldwin-Wallace (8-8; 0-2 OAC) on Saturday, March 29 at the 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

In game one, the Raiders got on the board first as senior/pitcher Lindsey Royer drove in two runs with a double in the bottom of the first inning. RBI singles by freshman/catcher Mara Palombaro and senior/outfielder Megan Polifrone extended the Mount Union and the first inning ended 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, sophomore/third baseman Anna Horning  had an RBI single to extend the Mount Union lead to 5-0. The Raiders would also add another run in the bottom of fourth on a hit by senior/first baseman Katie Olive to extended the lead further to 6-0.

After the Yellow-Jackets put a run on the board in the top of the fifth, freshman/second baseman Alex Lucak hit a solo-shot to left-center to make the Mount Union lead 7-1. Royer would not allow another run as the game ended by the same score.

Royer put in a masterful performance on the mound in game 1 as she pitched a complete game gave up four hits and struck out nine. She also went 3-4 at the plate with a double and two RBIs to lead the Purple and White to Victory in game one.

Devon ButlerGame two saw a great pitching duel between the Raider freshman Devon Butler and Yellow Jacket freshman Mackenzie Rohrbacher. Butler got the best of the duel as Mount Union walked away with the 1-0 victory.

The lone run was driven in by Lindsey Royer that scored senior/outfielder Lee Negrelli in the bottom of the first inning. The pitching shut down both teams as the game ended 1-0 in favor of the Purple and White.

Butler went 5.1 innings and allowed 4 hits while striking out 2. Royer came in in the fifth and shut down the Yellow Jackets to earn her first save of the season.

Mount Union will play a double header on Sunday, March 30 at 1:00 p.m. as they will continue OAC play against Wilmington college.
