Six Areas of Wellness

Wellness is a framework that can be used in many ways to help us organize, understand, and balance our own human growth and development. Our personal well being is dependent on equal attention to each of the six primary areas of life: social, intellectual, spiritual, emotional, physical and occupational.

Social Wellness

  • Developing friendships
  • Healthy sexual behaviors
  • Ability to interact comfortably with others
  • Work for harmony in personal and community environments

Intellectual Wellness

  • Desire to learn from challenges and experiences
  • Continuing intellectual growth
  • Engage in stimulating mental activities
  • Discover, process and evaluate information

Spiritual Wellness

  • Seek meaning and purpose in life
  • Open to others' beliefs and backgrounds
  • Grow in one's own spiritual and religious beliefs

Occupational Wellness

  • Development of career-related skills
  • Focus on achieving career goals
  • Pulling together all parts of wellness into plans for the future: career, family, future wellness

Physical Wellness

  • Engage in regular physical activity
  • Engage in proper nutrition and health care
  • Minimal or no use of tobacco, alcohol or other drugs

Emotional Wellness

  • Acknowledge and accept a wide range of feelings in self and others
  • Free expression and management of feelings
  • Develop positive self-esteem
  • Attitudes, values and behaviors work together
  • Manage feelings without the use of chemicals
