What are the benefits of involvement?

Studies show that students who are involved during their college years look back on the experience and attest to gaining knowledge and satisfaction associated with that involvement. Students who are more often engaged in their community manage their time better and make connections that often last a life-time. By combining your skills developed through campus and community involvement with the knowledge you are gaining in the classroom, you will become much better prepared for your future endeavors!

John Gardner, author of Your College Experience: Strategies for Success shares basic benefits of campus involvement:

1. You'll meet people.

You will have the chance to meet those who have interesting perspectives and diverse backgrounds, as well as those who may share common interests and perspectives and become your friend!

2. You'll experiment and gain experience.

Try new things that you might not have encountered yet! Join a group that sounds interesting! Challenge yourself with things that you were unsure of or afraid to try.

3. You'll improve your abilities.

Involvement provides the chance to build on your personal skills through practice, as well as offers the opportunity to discover a hidden talent as well!

4. You'll get the most out of college.

Learn to balance your co-curricular and curricular experiences, as well as become aware of and participate in the campus community and its unique culture.

5. You'll feel at home faster.

Involvement and membership allow you to invest yourself in the campus and community experiences around you.

6. You'll manage stress better.

By getting and staying involved you are creating outlets to channel that stress that comes along with life in transition. You will have the chance to develop ways to create a healthy lifestyle for yourself and your habits that will follow you after college.

7. You'll organize your time better.

Learn to become more efficient as a result of increased demands upon your time. Through involvement you will find ways to reduce that procrastination time!

8. You'll improve your resume.

Through marketing your skills you learned through your involvement in campus activities, you'll show how you are a well-rounded individual.
