Purple Raiders Hooked By Muskies

Paul MariottiMount Union College's baseball team (17-12, 8-6 OAC) was swept in a doubleheader against Muskingum College 15-15, 5-10 OAC) by the scores of 2-1 and 6-2 on Saturday, April 19.

In game one, the Purple and White's bats were off to a slow start, scoring only one run in the bottom of the third inning off an RBI single from junior/right fielder Grant Sevek.

The Muskies would rally back in the top of the fourth scoring one run off a double from Brock Huntsman.  Muskingum would score one more run in the top of the fifth and  seventh to finalize the score 3-1.

Starting pitcher Paul Mariotti suffered the loss falling 5-1.  Mariotti went 6.1 innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out three.

Individual leaders for Mount Union were Sevek who went 1-3, including an RBI, freshman/center fielder Greg Ferrell went 1-2 with two walks.

In game two, the game was at a stand-still until the fouth inning when Greg Ferrell tripled, and would score off the bat of  senior/left fielder Andy Warner.  Mount would add one more run in the bottom of the fifth when freshman/short stop Craig Knott singled home sophomore/catcher Connor Nell.

Muskingum would respond in the top of the fifth by scoring one run from a sacrifice fly by Eric Spitzer.  The Fighting Muskies would keep the Purple Raiders scoreless for the next four innings and added five more runs of their own.

Game leaders included, Grant Sevek who went 2-5, Nell added a double and senior Dave Bogner had a pinch hit double.  On the mound, junior starter Brett Thomas took the loss, and is now 4-2 on the year.

For the Muskies, Wes Carder was 3-5, with two runs scored and Brock Huntsman was 2-3, with two RBI.

Mount Union next travels to Washington & Jefferson (PA) on Thursday, April 24.  First pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
