Larry Kehres is 263-21-3 (.923) in his 23rd season as head coach at Mount Union. Kehres is one of the most successful coaches in all of college football, as under his tenure, the Purple Raiders have claimed 18 Ohio Athletic Conference championships, including the last 16 in a row and nine of the last 15 NCAA Division III National Championships.
The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year is awarded to the college football coach who best demonstrates sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility, and excellence on and off the field.
In 2008, a Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year selection will be named in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, and Division III. The award process will take place over the course of the college football season, winners will be chosen based on fan vote (20-percent), media vote (25-percent) and a College Football Hall of Fame selection committee (55-percent). The top 25 coaches in each divisions fan voting that concludes on December 6, 2008 will be forwarded to the selection committee and media for a final vote.
More than just a trophy, the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award provides each winning coach with $50,000 to donate to one or more charitable organizations of his choice and a $20,000 grant to donate to his school’s alumni association to enhance student scholarships and activities. As of last year, $300,000 has been donated to charity, and $100,000 given to alumni associations.
