Larry Kehres Named AFCA National Coach of the Year for Record Ninth Time
(NASHVILLE, TN)--No coach at any level in college football history has been named American Football Coaches Association National Coach of the Year more than Mount Union College's Larry Kehres who claimed the honor for a record ninth time Tuesday at the AFCA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.
Kehres led the Purple Raiders to a 15-0 record including a 31-26 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the school's 10th National Championship.
A 1971 Mount Union graduate, Kehres served 11 years as an assistant coach at the school before taking over as head coach in 1986 and has compiled a 275-21-3 record over the last 23 seasons.
He has been named Ohio Athletic Conference Coach of the Year six times, AFCA Regional Coach of the Year a record 13 times and in only its second year of existence, Liberty Mutual National Coach of the Year in 2008.
Also at the convention, Kehres was named first vice president of the AFCA.
