Football Team Highlighted in National Preseason Magazines
The release of preseason annual magazines from Lindy’s and The Sporting News signal the rise toward the start of the 2009 football season and the Mount Union College football team is again prominently featured in both publications.
Lindy’s has the Purple Raiders on the top of their preseason top-25 poll followed by Stagg Bowl opponent University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at No. 2 and fellow Ohio Athletic Conference member Otterbein College is rated No. 11.
Seniors in wide receiver Cecil Shorts III (Cleveland/Collinwood), defensive end James Herbert (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) and safety Drew McClain (Newark/Licking Valley) are each first team preseason All-American first team selections, while senior defensive tackle Matt Williamson (Columbus/DeSales) is a preseason second team selection by Lindy‘s.
The Sporting News has Wisconsin-Whitewater in the top spot in their preseason top-25 followed by Mount Union then Otterbein is in the No. 25 spot, while Shorts and Herbert were both preseason All-American picks.
Copies of both publications are available at local newsstands.
Mount Union opens the 2009 season against St. John Fisher (NY) College Saturday, Sept. 5 at 4 pm in Pittsford, NY.
