Raiders Win Back-to-Back OAC Championships

Mount Union College’s men's golf team finished first overall (620 strokes) out of nine teams competing at the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championships hosted by Ohio Northern at the Colonial Golfers Club in Harrod Ohio, on April 26. This is the third OAC Championship that the Purple Raiders have won and the second consecutive.

Mount Union was led by Senior Jason Nussbaum (Apple Creek/Waynedale), who shot a 152 (76-76) for the two day tournament earning him second place honors among the rest of the tournament field. 

In addition, senior Nate Mullen (Salem) shot a 154 (74-80), placing him in fifth place overall for the tournament, earning him All-OAC honors for the second straight year. Also earning All-OAC honors was freshman Lucas Murray (Canton/Canton South) who shot a 156 (79-77) placing him in a tie for eighth place. 

The top 10 finishers earn All-OAC honors.

Also competing for the Purple Raiders was freshman Tom Alshouse (Avon Lake), who posted a score of 158 (78-80), good for 11th position and freshman Cory Muller (Akron/Green), who finished tied for 28th with a 169 (83-86).

"Our guys really came through at the Conference Championships," noted Raider Head Coach Dan MacDuffie.  "We really had some great senior leadership all season and they displayed that this weekend.  I am extremely proud of everyone on our team and we feel that we have really made a name for our program, we are looking forward to Nationals and hopefully we can build on this success."

Final OAC Tournament Championship standings went as follows: Mount Union followed by Otterbein (631), Ohio Northern (632), Baldwin-Wallace (640), Heidelberg (646), John Carroll (651), Muskingum (675), Capital (683), and Wilmington (688). 

As OAC Champions, the Purple Raiders have automatically qualified for a spot in NCAA Divison III Men's Golf Championships hosted by Emory University and the Gwinnett Sports Commission, in Braselton, Georgia on May 13-16.

ROUND #1 HIGHLIGHTS

Mount Union College's men's golf team took its first step in defending its OAC crown by shooting a team total of 307 for a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the 2008 Ohio Athletic Conference Championships on Thursday, April 24 at Colonial Golfer's Club in Lima, Ohio.

Individually, Mount Union's senior Nate Mullen (Salem) finished the afternoon as the tournament's overall leader.  Mullen turned in a 74 for the par 72 course.  Other top performers include, senior Jason Nussbaum (Applecreek/Waynedale) is tied for third (76 strokes), freshman Tom Alhouse (Avon Lake) is tied for 10th position (78 strokes), freshman Lucas Murray (Canton/Canton South) is tied for 12th overall (79 strokes) and freshman Cory Muller (Akron/Green) is tied for 21st (83 strokes).

First round standings for the championships went as follows: Mount Union (307 strokes), Otterbein (310), Ohio Northern (312), Baldwin-Wallace (325), Heidelberg (325), John Carroll (328), Muskingum (340), Wilmington (340) and Capital (348).
