Raider Swimmers Compete In OAC Championships

Mount Union College's men's (156 points) and women's (151 points) teams each finished in third place at the three-day Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Wilmington on Saturday, February 16 at the University of Akron Ocasek Natatorium.

DAY THREE HIGHLIGHTS

Highlights on the third and final day of competition included a second consecutive men's individual title for Dan Hampu in the 200 yard backstroke (2:00.27). Jeff Budzowski also earned an individual title in the 200 yard breakstroke (2:12.25).

Earning All-OAC honors was Matt Carlozzi with a third place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle (17:06.80).

Other top performances included Cory Bostick who placed fourth in the 100 yard freestyle (49.34) and Jon Billak who placed sixth in the 200 yard backstroke (2:04.25).

The final men's team scores: Ohio Northern (305), Baldwin-Wallace (201), Mount Union (156), John Carroll (116), and Wilmington (78).

Mary Vallinger

The Lady Raiders were led by Mary Vallinger who was named Diver of the Year and captured an individual title in the 1 meter diving (406.30).

Earning All-OAC for the women were Jessica Shetler (18:24.79) and Sarah Eckersley (18:44.89) in the 1650 yard freestyle. Eckersley also placed third in the 200 yard butterfly (2:25.38).

Other top finishers for the Lady Raiders include Athena Miller who placed sixth in the 1650 yard freestyle (19:09.00), Kristin Bellay who placed sixth in the 200 yard backstroke (2:20.67), and Jamie Wright who placed sixth in the 100 yard freestyle (56.67).

The final women's team scores: John Carroll (266), Ohio Northern (257), Mount Union (151), Baldwin-Wallace (100), and Wilmington (91).

DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS

Mount Union College's men's swim team (107) is currently in third position, while the women's team (94) is also in third place after the second day of competition at the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Wilmington on Friday, February 15.

The men's team was led by the 800 yard freestyle relay team of Matt Carolozzi, Cory Bostick, Andrew Smith, and Mike Kuzma which finished in second place with a time of 7:18.74.

Kuzma earned an individual title in the 400 yard IM with a first place finish (4:18.60). Jeff Budzowski also earned an individual title finishing first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:00.04).

Dan Hampu each earned All-OAC honors on Friday with a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke (55.25). The top-three finishers in each event earn All-Ohio Athletic Conference status.

Other solid performances included Jon Billak who finished fourth in the 100 yard backstroke (56.68) and Carlozzi who placed fifth in the 100 yard butterfly (54.90).

The Lady Raiders were led by Mary Vallinger who claimed an individual title in the 3 meter diving and also set a school record (392.95) and Jessica Shetler who earned All-OAC honors with a third place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (2:02.19).

Other top finishers for the women's team included Chrissy Maclary who finished fourth in the 100 yard butterfly (1:04.23).

Team standings after day two on the men's side are Ohio Northern (206), Baldwin-Wallace (139), Mount Union (107), John Carroll (73), and Wilmington (53).

DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS

After Day #1 both the men's and women’s swim teams are currently third out of five teams.

Individually on the men's side, the Raiders were led by sophomores Mike Kuzma, who finished third in the 200 yard IM (2:02.75), and Andy Neimes, who finished fourth in the 50 yard freestyle (22.42). Also, the Mount Union men's relay team finished third in the 400 yard medley relay (3:41.69).

The Lady Raiders were led by freshman Jessica Shetler with a second place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:28.90) and sophomore Jamie Wright, who finished second in the 50 yard freestyle (25.37). The women’s relay team also finished third in the 200 yard freestyle medley relay (1:42.87).

Both men and women’s swimmers will be back in action on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16 to complete the OAC Championships from Wilmington, Ohio.
