Griffin Wins 1500 Meter National Title at NCAA Division III Track & Field National Championships

(MARIETTA, OH)--Mount Union College sophomore Ty Griffin (Massillon/Massillon Perry) won the national championship in the 1500 meters at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships at Don Drumm Stadium in Marietta, Ohio. Follow all the action online by clicking the link above.
Griffin ran a time of 3:53.41 which bested second place finisher Macklin Chaffee of Williams (MA) College by 0.09 seconds (3:53.50) and set a new Don Drumm Stadium record. He is the 50th student-athlete in Mount Union College history to win a national title at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. It was the fourth straight year a Purple Raider won a national title but first in a running event since 4x100 meter relay team won in 2006.
Also on Saturday, junior Judd Lutz (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 54-6 to earn All-American honors in the event for a third-straight year. Lutz also had an 11th place finish in the discus (155-10) on Friday.
On opening day of the championship on Thursday, sophomore Annie Patton (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk) finished fifth in the nation and earned All-American honors for a second-straight year in the javelin. Patton had a throw of 139-feet to finish just four inches out of fourth place, while junior Aubrey Loy (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) finished 11th in the long jump with a mark of 17-6.75.
