Sophomore Bill Schindel (Tallmadge/Akron Hoban) is now 10-2 on the season for Mount Union.
(ALLIANCE, OH)--Mount Union College's wrestling team scored a 23-20 victory over John Carroll University in the home and Ohio Athletic Conference opener Tuesday at Timken Gymnasium in Alliance.

It did not look good for the Purple Raiders early as John Carroll got a pair of pins at 125 and 133 along with a major decision at 141 to take a 16-0 lead in the match.

Mount Union's comeback started at 149 as freshman Kevin Shadrach (Parma/Parma) scored a 9-7 win over Daniel Mizener.

Shadrach's win started a rally as freshman Bryan Skoff (St. Clairsville/Bridgeport) nailed a pin at 157, and the Raiders nabbed close victories at 165 and 174 to close the gap to 16-15.

The Blue Streaks appeared to retake control when Ben Adams scored a major decision at 184 to push the score to 20-15, but Mount Union came right back to tie the match as sophomore Bill Schindel (Tallmadge/Akron Hoban) posted his 10th win of the season as he tied the match with a technical fall at 197.

Freshman Derrick Hesson (Caldwell/Caldwell) then came through for Mount Union as he held on for a 7-5 win at 285 and gave the Raiders the victory.

Mount Union evens its dual meet record at 1-1 overall and is 1-0 in the OAC, while John Carroll is winless at 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.

Mount Union heads this weekend to the Messiah (Pa.) Petrofes Invitational in Grantham, PA.
