Loy Goes Long in Women's Indoor Track and Field Opener
(BEREA, OH)--Mount Union senior Aubrey Loy (Canton/Massillion Jackson) qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the long jump as she won the event with a mark of 18-5 in the season opening B-W Mid January Meet Saturday at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea.Loy's mark was the best of the season in NCAA Division III so far and just barely missed the facility record of 18-5.5 which is held by another Purple Raider, Kenya Shipp in 1997.
Christin Handley (East Aurora, NY/Iroquois Central) also won an event as she took the title in the 1000 meters with a time of 3:08.89.
Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/Saints John & Paul) placed second in the 400 meters (1:02.76), Samara Sutton (Youngstown/Boardman) took third in the 200 meters (27.64) and Annie Patton (Darlington, PA/Blackhawk) placed fourth in the shot put (37-10.5) to round out the top performances.
Mount Union heads back to Berea next Saturday (Jan. 30) for the Ohio Athletic Conference Indoor Relay Meet.
