Major:  Accounting

Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
I chose to pursue a degree in accounting because I am a very analytical person and enjoy working with money and numbers. It comes easy to me to be able to perform the functions that accountants do. I also wanted to establish a specialty that will help in areas other than accounting like law and finance.

What types of jobs are available for students who share your major?

There are many jobs available for an accounting major. You can take the CPA exam and become a certified public accountant. You can work at a public accounting firm, which typically does taxes and audits or you can use your skills at the IRS.

With a degree in accounting you don’t always have to enter the field of accounting. You can enter the financial industry and work with investments, retirement plans, etc.  Accounting is a versatile major and has many options for you once you graduate.

How will you use your degree upon graduation?

After graduation I plan on using my degree to get into law school. After I graduate law school there are many different paths I want to take. One of them is working as some type of financial lawyer. I also want to use my interests in sports to become a college coach. The last thing I would like to do is run for a political office.

What activities are you involved in?
I currently play two sports, soccer and baseball. I was named an assistant captain for soccer and was named to the ESPN the magazine Academic All-District team.

Off the field I am a Community Educator, Preview and Orientation Guide, treasurer for the Mount Union College Republicans and the representative for men’s soccer in the SAAC. The most rewarding activity is being a Preview and Orientation guide. I have an awesome time over the summer helping the new students of Mount Union transition from high school to college life.

What elements should a person possess in order to succeed in your major?
Like all other majors you have to be very hard working and enjoy what you are doing.  This is probably the most important element because if you don’t love what you are doing you will not succeed. Also, you have to be very precise and detail orientated.  One decimal point in the wrong spot or a math error could potentially be very dangerous.

What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you?
Work hard and get to know the professors at a personal level.  They are very knowledgeable and are willing to help out if you need them.

Study hard, get involved and make the right choices. Go out and meet as many new people as possible. College is an awesome experience and it’s what you make of it. I am having the time of my life here at Mount Union.
