High School: Firestone
Major: Art
Why did you choose to pursue art at Mount Union?
I've been creating artwork my whole life and have been going to visual and performing arts schools since the fourth grade. Therefore I decided to make it my major.
How will you use you degree upon graduation?
I will attend graduate school and also get a degree in architecture, my true desire.
What activities are you involved in?
Kappa Pi art fraternity treasurer, Black Student Union, physical plant worker, and student rep for Cross Curricular Development Committee
Elements a person should posses to succeed in your major?
One should have a strong visual eye, but above all be prepared to sacrifice long nights and weekends doing artwork. One should also be prepared to purchase vast amounts of supplies and materials- money is not an option when pertaining to a great art piece
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you?
Art is a lovely major to have because you don't have to buy books for the class (even though professor Joel Collins wants people to have a book...really not needed), but the draw back to that is one must buy supplies. Depending on the quality of the outcome of your work supplies may vary, so this means a little time and money would have to be used for the best quality of work. Other than supplies someone would have to be prepaired to sometimes spend nights in the art building doing work. Outside of the purchasing of supplies and the hard dedication needed for this major one could change the ideal of the "starving artist" into the "successful artist."
