Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
When I began my first semester here, I had no idea what I wanted to major in. I put a lot of thought into it, but then realized you have to do what you most enjoy. I have always been interested in biology, and love all aspects of nature. I am amazed by the diversity of the world's inhabitants and the way each piece of the Earth works together to support life.
What types of jobs are available for students who share your major?
Jobs in environmental biology vary from more fieldwork-related areas such as forestry, ecosystem management, restoration or preservation, to more people-oriented jobs in education, policymaking and environmental consultation. There are many more than this, of course, and so jobs are opening up everywhere.
How will you use your degree upon graduation?
I am not totally sure yet what I will be doing, but I have a little while longer to decide, and I am certain I will have direction from the faculty throughout my years here. At the moment, I think a job in restoration or preservation would be most interesting to me. I love being outdoors. I believe I will be happy with whatever I end up doing.
What activities are you involved in?
I participate in band, and will be secretary for Mount Union's Habitat for Humanity chapter starting in fall '07. I'm also hoping to get more involved with Students for Environmental Awareness and a couple other organizations.
Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major?
Binoculars, microscopes, and field guides, as well as a little dedication, patience, and a strong interest in the sciences. A love for nature helps a lot!
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you?
Learn as much as you can about every subject you can. Take as many biology classes as possible and even courses outside the subject can help, such as sociology and economics. Taking one of each kind of class will help you find the direction you want to move in. Also, don't just memorize information, internalize it and make your learning experience a part of your daily life.
