High School: Normandy
Major: Writing
Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
I am pursuing a major in writing and minors in media studies and web design. Writing has always been an outlet for me because I can express myself best through it. It is a strong, firm foundation in my education and personal life. Not only does it ground my passion, but is an active form of communication in any discipline; especially, when just voicing a certain issue or topic is not enough. In writing, things have a greater impact on the receiver of any message (this case the reader). I chose to pursue a minor in web design and media studies because writing is implored through different styles, art, and audiences. The contexts of writing are framed through appealing presentations and media that society is dependent upon. I am very excited about the new web design minor because it will enable me to construct informational media and graphic art for a world wide audience, while still sustaining my written words and voice as a writer. I believe, to be a good writer one must excel in all areas of writing. That is what I am aiming to do through my studies at Mount, and I feel like the possibilities are endless.
What types of jobs are available for students who share your major?
In writing and media studies there are jobs available in journalism, public relations, advertising, editing, copy-editing, law, political science, technical writing, broadcasting (radio & television), teaching and creative writing. Students who are interested in web design can find job opportunities anywhere from advertising agencies to specialized businesses. The internet is expanding into a vital device that is increasing sales. Many industries are simply looking for individuals to create effective representations of their organization (via the net). Even freelance designers are in great demand.
How will you use your degree upon graduation?
Eventually, I would like to work my way toward a magazine editor. After graduation, I plan on using my degree while pursuing a career in either journalism or public relations, and write short stories in my pastime. The production and design for print media in these areas are very comparable. I've been expanding on my skills for creating web pages through layout programs to illustrate my work.
In what activities are you involved?
Currently, I'm the commentary editor for the Dynamo and an editor for Mount Union's literary journal, the Calliope. I work for the writing center and serve as a program administrator for The Office of Residence Life. I'm also active in Janus, the social responsibility group.
Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major?
I believe someone who is interested should have a lot of patience and an overall appreciation for art and writing. It requires a lot of attention to detail that must be acknowledged through rhetorical analysis and the design (or layout) process.
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you?
I would say to work hard in a field that you are passionate about. No matter what profession you decide to pursue, I think it is essential to enjoy yourself. As college students, we constantly make decisions that affect our future and we sometimes forget about our own happiness. Make choices that allow you to achieve and expand on your goals. Ultimately, this will change you as a person and make your future brighter.
