Why did you choose to pursue a Business/Marketing major at Mount Union?
In high school I took a few business classes and really enjoyed them. After choosing to go to Mount Union, I knew I wanted to pursue business but wasn't sure which concentration I wanted. Marketing really appealed to me because you can be creative, work with people, and always be involved in a variety of challenges.
What types of jobs are available for students who share your major?
With a major in Business and Marketing you can do a lot of different things. You can work within the marketing department of any type of business that is of interest to you. You could also work for an advertising firm that would help promote a product or service for different companies. The possibilities are endless, and that is something that really appeals to me.
How will you use your degree upon graduation?
I would like to work in event planning for either a large corporation or a planning firm. In doing this I would be planning company events, incentives, and trips. This would allow me to travel a lot and work with people, which are two things that I love. People are always really excited to plan events and/or attend them, so everyone is always happy and eager to talk to you which is always a plus. This also allows for a lot of variety because you aren't just sitting at a desk doing the same thing everyday.
What activities are you involved in?
I have worked as a student assistant in the Office of Alumni and College Activities for two years now, and have been involved in many alumni and college events here on campus. This summer I had an internship with Westfield Insurance in the event planning department, which was an awesome experience. I am also the vice president of the American Marketing Association chapter here at Mount Union, where we are organizing a service project, many speaker sessions, and planning to work with a local business on their marketing objectives.
Elements a person should possess to succeed in your major?
Anyone wanting to be successful with a marketing degree should possess strong interpersonal skills, good networking skills, creativity, and to be able to work well with others. In marketing you have to be a good communicator and a people person. You are going to be around people a lot, which in turn will give you great networking opportunities. You have to be good at taking advantage of those opportunities. Also, creativity is important because you always have to come up with new and fresh ideas to promote and implement your product or service. Teamwork is another quality one should hold. In marketing you are always working with others to meet your objectives. While you may have tasks of your own, your team will always need to come together in the end to achieve your desired goal.
What advice can you offer for someone who is considering having the same major as you?
Really take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Attend job fairs, join business clubs, and pursue internships. These are all great opportunities to network and get your name out there. Also, research your major. There are so many jobs within business that you may have never even thought of. If you wait until your senior year to do all this it will be too late.
